The special regulations for preventing exposure during metal arc welding and similar work have been revised.

"Welding fumes" and "basic manganese oxide" will be added to the specific chemical substances (Category 2 substances).

This is based on the recommendations of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the European Commission's Scientific Committee (EC) regarding exposure limits for manganese and its compounds by particle size. "Welding fumes" and "manganese and its compounds" are positioned as distinct chemical substances (Category 2 controlled substances) due to the high likelihood that their toxicity and health effects differ. For the time being, they will not be classified as special controlled substances, and a re-evaluation will occur once findings regarding carcinogenic substances become clear. Overall, this amendment requires not only general ventilation in the workplace but also the appointment of a work supervisor who has completed the "Specific Chemical Substances and Tetraalkyl Lead Work Supervisor Skills Training," as well as measures such as measuring the concentration of welding fumes in the air using a sampler. *For detailed information on the column, please refer to the related links.
